When You Think Of Me

By Jeremy Denton

ACT ONE
SCENE ONE
INTERIOR: BEDROOM

(Jeremy stands there in the bedroom and looks at Jason and how peaceful he looks. )

(Jeremy puts a note on the nightstand that takes the form of “When You Think of Me” by Mark Wills. )

THE NOTE
You look so peaceful sleeping
You don't know that I'm leaving but I'm gone
Well I did my best to beat 'em, but in my head the demons said move on
When you wake up you're gonna curse my name
But as some time goes by I hope and pray

When you think of me
Remember the way that I used to be
Remember the times I held you tenderly
Remember the way that I love you

I think about the night I met you
I swore I'd never forget you, well I won't
I think about the way you live and breathe beside my dreams forever
Well you'll be better when I'm gone
Cuz I know you're gonna fall in love again
I'm sorry this is how it has to end

When you think of me
Remember the way that I used to be
Remember the times I held you tenderly
Remember the way I love you
When you think of me

As I pick up these bags and turn around
I say a little prayer and hope somehow

When you think of me
Remember the way that I used to be
Remember the times I held you tenderly
Remember the way that I love you

When you think of me
Remember the way that I used to be
Remember the times I held you tenderly
Remember the way that I love you

When you think of me

I'm sorry,
Jeremy

NARRATOR

BEGIN SCENE TWO

INTERIOR: BEDROOM (A FEW HOURS LATER)

(Jason woke to find the note on the nightstand. )

JASON
(INTERNAL THOUGHTS)
Come on Jeremy. What are you trying to pull.

NARRATOR
He walks through the house looking for Jeremy and realizes all of Jeremy's clothes are gone. His truck's not in the driveway.

JASON
Damn Jeremy. This isn't funny. Where's my phone.

NARRATOR
Jason gets his phone and dials Jeremy's number.

ATT MESSAGE
(FROM JEREMYS CELL PHONE)
The wireless subscriber you have called no longer accepts calls from this number.

NARRATOR
Jason's heart sank. He had read the note Jeremy had left and it had said that he would be better off if Jeremy were gone but at that moment, Jason felt the saddest he had ever felt. The note also stated that Jeremy thought it was his fault that Jason had no relationship with his parents and that if he left then maybe he could get that relationship back. Maybe he could work things out with his parents. What Jeremy didn't know was that Jason didn't care for a relationship with his parents. All Jason wanted was for Jeremy to be by his side. Jeremy had been Jason's first and one true love. This was going to severely hurt Jason, physically and emotionally.

BEGIN SCENE THREE

NARRATOR
It's sixteen months later and Jason never has fallen in love again. Jason never got back in touch with his parents. Jason had been a junior in high school when Jeremy walked out on him and Jason went down hill from there. His grades dropped. They plummeted from strait-A's to nothing but C's. Jason had truly hit rock bottom. True, he did graduate with his friends and everything but there was no one to cheer him on up on stage. Jeremy had left him and his parents didn't want to come to a faggot's graduation. His parents hadn't seen him in two years at that point. Jason sat there surrounded by all his friends and their boyfriends and girlfriends.

JASON
(INTERNAL THOUGHT)
Jeremy, wherever you are, I hope you know what you have done to me. Unknown to everyone at the graduation, a mysterious figure was lingering around the back watching Jason. Jeremy did as he had said and hadn't forgotten about Jason.

JEREMY
(INTERNAL THOUGHT)
God how could I have been so stupid. I should have known that Jason wouldn't be able to just get over this. I had been his everything and then I just walked out on him. I love him and I caused all of this. He was so happy and energetic when we were together but now he seems to be nothing more than a hollow vessel.

ALEX
(TO JASON)
Come on Jason. We're high school graduates now. Are you coming to the graduation party?

JASON
Yeah. I guess.

ALEX
Okay. Let's go then. Jason and Alex went to their own houses and got changed into some more casual clothes and then they went to the party. Jason sat there at a table talking to Alex. Then from across the room, the mysterious figure entered. That mysterious figure had been the one who had walked out on Jason all those months ago. The one who had left Jason an emotional wreck. Jason looked around the room and caught a glimpse of Jeremy.

JASON
(INTERNAL THOUGHT)
Oh god. Is it really him? After all these months, he isn't about to come back in my life now. Is he? He left me to be alone in this little one horse town. With no one on my side other that my friends.

Jeremy walked up to the table

JEREMY
(TO EVERYONE AT THE TABLE, BUT JASON IN PARTICULAR)
Hey.

JASON
Hey. What are you doing here?

JEREMY
(STANDING NEXT TO JASON)
I saw you graduate. Jason, I'm proud of you. Listen, can we go and talk outside?

JASON
Sure.

The two of them walked out and Jason pushed the button on his key chain to unlock the Hummer.

JEREMY
I should have known that the only kid in school with a Hummer would be you.

JASON
Jeremy, can you tell me one thing? Why did you leave me?

JEREMY
Jason, I left you because I felt as if it were my fault that you didn't have relationship with your parents. I thought that if I left it would get better with the three of you.

JASON
(MOVING CLOSE TO JEREMY)
Well. I don't know if you know this or not but after you left, I didn't get in touch with my parents. But I did become even more distant from my family and friends after you left. (ANGRILY) DAMMIT JEREMY, you were my world. I never wanted anyone but you.

JEREMY
(TRYING TO RECONCILE THINGS)
I want to be your world again. Jason, if you can find it in you to take me back, I want us to start over. God Jason, I am so sorry for what I did to you. I am so sorry and I promise I won't ever leave you again.

JASON
(REGAINING SOME OF HIS OLD SELF; SOME OF HIS OLD GLOW)
I want you back so much and I will take you back on one condition.

JEREMY
Anything.

JASON
I want the two of us to go back in there and have a good time at the party. Then we go back to our home. We go back home and you move your stuff back in. We go back and you promise never to leave me again. Okay?

JEREMY
Okay. And Jason?

JASON
(WITH THAT OLD GLOW, NOT SEEN FOR SIXTEEN MONTHS)
Yeah babe?

NARRATOR
As soon as Jason spun around, Jeremy took Jason in his arms and kissed him for the first time in a long time. Jason, with that kiss, felt better than he had in a long time. The two of them stood there kissing and then they went back in. Later that night, Jeremy moved his stuff back into the house and he never left Jason again. Jason and Jeremy went on about their life, now back together, and live happily ever after.
